Ronaldo Rwubuzizi is a PhD candidate at the University of Bologna investigating the molecular and
biological mechanisms underlying biocontrol efficacy against the phytopathogens Erwinia amylovora
and Stemphylium vesicarium. His doctoral research employs integrated molecular approaches to
characterize antagonistic bacterial isolates, elucidating their virulence suppression mechanisms through
comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses of virulence and biocontrol-related gene expression
using temperature-dependent functional assays to decipher the biochemical and genetic basis of
bacterial antagonism. His work is conducted within a European collaborative research framework
(BiomeHealth Project) involving the University of Porto and Wageningen University & Research, with
emphasis on understanding plant pathogen behavior under climate change scenarios and plant
phytobiome-exposome interactions in sustainable disease management.
His academic trajectory demonstrates complementary expertise spanning beneficial microorganism
characterization and molecular microbiology. During his postgraduate training in South Korea, Rwubuzizi
conducted research on mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes and their metabolic therapeutic
potential, with publications examining anti-inflammatory and insulin-sensitizing mechanisms in diet
induced metabolic disorders. Concurrently, he developed specialized expertise in lactic acid bacteria
(LAB) isolation, characterization, and functional assessment, with published contributions on bacteriocin
production, antioxidant generation, and probiotic potential of LAB isolates from fermented vegetables
and oral microbiota. His research interests encompass bacterial phenotyping protocols, microbial
antagonism mechanisms, bioinformatics applications in microbiology, food safety, and the role of
beneficial microorganisms in sustainable agricultural and human health applications.
As a recognized expert in the BiomeHealth consortium, Rwubuzizi has contributed pedagogically
through lecturing on bacterial phenotyping protocols and pathogen behavior under climate change
conditions, thereby advancing scientific knowledge dissemination at the intersection of agricultural
phytopathology and sustainable biocontrol strategies.
